This Masterplan does not encompass a design for a new campus but involves the extension of an existing typical modernist campus from the 60s; the campus of Eindhoven University of Technology. This kind of green, spacious campus would normally be found only in the periphery. But where the campus in the 50s was indeed planned in the outskirts of Eindhoven, it is now situated in the middle of the city: an ‘inner city' campus with 'outer city' qualities. The developed Masterplan builds on the coherent and consistently elaborated vision of (functionalist) urban design and architecture with a primarily industrial aesthetic. The strengthening of the green and generously spacious character of the campus as formulated
by OD205 (the office of campus architect Van Embden which formulated the original urban plan of the campus) forms the starting point. The quantity of pavement in the cultivated core of the existing campus is being reduced in favour of green space through replacing parking lots by parking buildings. With the arrival of knowledge-intensive companies, institutes, a technical college and dwellings on campus we no longer speak of TU/e campus, but of TU/e Science Park. A science- and engineering campus, substantively built around the university, with a wide variety of functions and facilities on a modern campus nearby the centre of Eindhoven.
