Closed until now, the NRE-terrain has known a rich history as a former gas plant situated at the Eindhovensch Kanaal (Eindhoven Channel). Ever since its foundation in 1899 it has endured many transformations and it is at the verge of yet another one. However, this time the transformation is aimed at a small-scale, lively and creative area bordering at the centre of Eindhoven. It is thus no ordinary city district, but a unique location where individuals, entrepreneurs and other parties that jointly would like to create an
inspiring piece of Eindhoven convene. The historical buildings on the terrain are one of the scarce remnants of the former industry on the east side of Eindhoven, as it had its particular appearance as in the first decades of the twentieth century. These buildings do not possess a monumental status, however, there is an awareness of their cultural and historical value. Therefore, it is this particular NRE-characteristic in proximity to the water that distinguishes it from other areas in Eindhoven.
