Eindhoven is in the middle of a new transition in scale: from provincial town to international Brainport. This study focuses on the Ring, an import stable factor in the spatial development of the city.

By means of an historical study and drawn analyses, this research provides insight into the genesis of the Ring, its operation as a traffic system and as urban space. A methodical comparison with, among more, the Viennese Ringstraße and Ebenezer Howard's garden city scheme shows the potential of the Ring as a monumental carrier of urban identity.
